A centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI) provides an opportunity to develop important expertise for invention and value creation. Through long-term research conducted in close collaboration between prominent research groups and relevant industry, an SFI enhances technology transfer, internationalisation and researcher training and education.

The scientific merit of the research must be of high international calibre. An SFI may receive support for a total of eight years (an initial five-year period with the possibility of a three-year extension).
